Make body scrub at home – We have been soooo busy this weekend! They made a 53″ tutu, a 38″ tutu, and now they must make 3 small tutus. Whew! Our tutus and things are going to be featured in a mall in St. Louis beginning this Friday! They have LOTS of work to do – none of our things are tagged or anything! Geez! I wanted to stop in and write a fast blog because I know everyone loves tutorials and projects! All right well perhaps not everyone, but I sure do!

I am making Valentine’s Day baskets for Rachel’s mom, aunt, sister, and for my mom. (Mom, if you are reading this.. disregard that last comment.. they are supposed to be a surprise!) I am not sure what I am going to put all of the stuff in.. I bought these small take-out boxes but they are small now that I have all these nifty things like scrubs, soaps, and knitted wash cloths!

First, I knitted a red wash cloth for each basket. This week, I will make some heart soaps, scent will be “Love Spell” ($3.99 at Hobby Lobby, and I used my 40% off coupon! w00t!). I am also including the body scrub, which is what this post is about.

Merge equal parts of brown sugar and white sugar. I recommend beginning out with a cup of each, to get the feel of what you are working with. Add in olive oil (I recommend LIGHT olive oil) until you get the consistency you require. If you have ever used any kind of hand scrubs that have the oils in them, you know exactly what I am talking about. If not, I cannot report the consistency but you require it to where you can rub it on your skin but you don’t require it oily or the oils will stay on – gross.

Then, add a teaspoon of vanilla. Vanilla as in the baking vanilla. Now, this part is optional or you could replace the vanilla with some essential oils. recall you will have a slight brown sugar smell so you don’t require to add anything odd, or it will smell like.. who knows what.

Put the scrub in a package & you are done!! I bought 10 small plastic containers with lids at the Dollar Tree for a buck. Of work glass ones would be a lot nicer but I could not find any small ones I liked! I think Michael’s might have some, I haven’t looked yet. Sorry, rambling.. haha. So, anyway, these scrubs are super easy & they make your skin soft! Add a ribbon & card to the container & you have a GREAT Valentine’s Day gift. Also add a small note telling the recipient to pat their skin dry in lieu of scrubbing it off with a dry wash cloth.. it helps your skin stay softer for longer periods of time.

I know my tutorials don’t always have a TON of pics of the steps, & that is because I don’t realize I am posting them as tuts until I am completed. I will work on this! If you have any questions, ask. You could always use different body scrub recipes, depending on the recipient’s likes/dislikes. google “home made body scrubs” or “body scrub recipes”.

Howard stern tiger woods beauty pageant – Golfing legend and world’s number 1 Tiger Woods, has been trying to put all the affairs scandal behind him, and get his life back. But that apparently didn’t stop radio show host Howard Stern from going ahead with a planned beauty pageant for the golfer’s alleged mistresses recently.

This of course hasn’t gone down too well with many people. Fox News reported on the pageant previously, and said that as if Tiger’s apology last week wasn’t enough public humiliation, now several of his former mistresses have agreed to take part in a beauty pageant.

And what makes it even worse is the fact that they were said to be competing for a $100,000 prize. The Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant, which was of course organized by “shock jock” Howard Stern, actually took place today (Wednesday March 10th).

The mistresses, who took part in the pageant, were to compete in categories such as personality, talent and swimsuit. And according to a report at examiner.com, it was Jamie Jungers who was said to have won the competition, walking away with $75,000.

She may not have come out looking like a winner in the Tiger Woods sex scandal, but former mistress Jamie Jungers is No. 1 in Howard Stern’s eyes.

According to RadarOnline.com, Jungers took home the title and a $75,000 cash prize in the shock jock’s beauty pageant composed of Woods’ former lovers.

Also vying for the prize were ex-mistresses Loredana Jolie and Jaimee Grubbs, who is said to have won $15,000 for finishing in second place.

Jungers reportedly came out the winner after answering most of Stern’s prying questions, including those about Woods’ endowments and turn-ons.

The golfer’s No. 1 mistress, Rachel Uchitel, was reportedly banned from participating in the contest due to a settlement agreement with Woods, TMZ.com reported.

No word yet on who rated the women, though it’s doubtful Woods’ estranged wife, Elin, accepted Stern’s offer to judge.

Howard Stern is looking to crown Tiger Woods’ best mistress.

The shock jock has confirmed that a beauty pageant featuring the disgraced golfer’s many ex-lovers will take place on March 10, according to The Times of Britain.

Four out of Woods’ 13 alleged mistresses are set to compete for a $100,000 prize, sponsored by dating Web site AshleyMadison.com.

Though the identities of the women have yet to be revealed, the golfer’s No. 1 mistress, Rachel Uchitel, is banned from participating due to a settlement agreement with Woods, reports TMZ.com.

But Uchitel’s friends have reportedly hatched a plan to send a cardboard cutout of the former cocktail waitress in her place.

Woods’ alleged mistresses will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, personality and talent.

No word yet on who will be rating the ladies, although Stern is said to have offered a judging spot to Woods’ estranged wife, Elin.

Woods finally made a public apology last week, admitting that he had felt “entitled” and “deserved to enjoy all the temptations.”

Stern was highly critical of the philandering sports stars’ “I’m sorry” statement.

“Tiger Woods looked like he wanted to be anywhere on the planet but in that room. It didn’t seem like this was his idea or anything he wanted to be a part of,” said Stern on his radio show.

Big east tournament bracket – If Jim Calhoun’s Huskies man up and play the way they are capable of than this is going to be a long 40 minutes for the Red Storm. But I’m not so sure that Connecticut can just flip that switch right now after what has been a horrific season that will produce an NIT bid at best barring the Huskies run the table at the Garden, which ain’t happening.

The season overall has been a complete and total disaster for UCONN. There is no doubt a ton of talent led by a stud in Kemba Walker to go along with quality players like Robinson, Dyson, Edwards and Oriakhi but obviously talent did not win out with this team as they have turned into complete mush. The win at Villanova seemed to give the Huskies a chance to turn things around and it looked possible for a week or so but then bam they lost the last three games to the season and are now all done.

The Storm is not the most talented of teams but DJ Kennedy is a borderline stud and Hardy, Burrell and Horne among a few others are solid as well. This game is pretty much at home here at Madison Square Garden and there is no reason why the Storm can’t rise up and beat the underachieving Huskies.

I like Norm Stewart as a coach and think he has slowly but surely starting to turn this program back around a bit. Of course it still doesn’t come close to resembling the teams from the 80’s with Mullin and Berry and Wennington and Shelton Jones and others but this version of St. John’s does have an upside and we have seen that a fair amount of times this season.

The Johnies won at South Florida, Notre Dame and DePaul over the past few weeks and despite still being nothing more than average are competitive and being at home here should be just that in at least a cover.

The first game from the Big East tournament 2010 bracket schedule has been played in New York City as the start of March Madness begins. South Florida defeated DePaul today in the first Big East Tournament 2010 with a win 58-49 over DePaul.

Dominique Jones scored 20 points with 9 rebounds for South Florida in their win. Jones also had 3 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots. For DePaul, Will Walker had 20 points with 5 rebounds and 1 assist in the losing effort.

The University of South Florida took an early 30-15 lead in the first half and held on for the win despite being outscored in the second half 34-28. The DePaul team just did not have enough to overcome the initial 15 point deficit.

Guard Mike Mercer of South Florida added 14 points to push the Bulls to the first win of the tournament

The Big East Tournament bracket pairings are set for the 2010 event being held in New York, N.Y. The times, pairings and television network are included.

Effects of global warming on humans – When the whole environment will experience the effects of global warming, naturally humans won’t be an exception. In fact, we will be the worst affected beings on the planet because directly or indirectly we are dependent on all the above mentioned components of the environment. Animals and plants are related to each other, extinction of either will put tremendous pressure on other, eventually leading to its extinction. When I was invited to welcome you to the Department of Health and Human Service’s 26th observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, my first thought was about how honored I was to be asked. My second thought was about what Martin Luther King’s birth could mean to a rebirth of health care in this country. Few have had as much impact upon the American consciousness.

But what did Martin Luther King, Jr. think about health care?

My colleagues and I searched through his writings and his speeches, and realized that he didn’t give speeches about health care. Martin Luther King, Jr. was confronting the basic nature of American society. He had mountains to move—and mountaintops to climb—for this country so that today we can address the issues of high quality health care for all Americans.

If Dr. King were alive today he’d be 71 years old. He’d be eligible for Medicare. Like many 71-year-olds, he might be dealing with a chronic medical condition—maybe arthritis, or hypertension, or diabetes. What would he think of the health care system we have today? What would he think of the medical care he might receive? And what advice would he be giving the Department of Health and Human Services?

No, Dr. King didn’t give many speeches about health care. But like the rest of society, health care had to change too.

When I was a teenager in Memphis, before the Medicare program was passed, the Baptist Hospital was the biggest in town, and the proudest of the care it gave. But if you were African-American in Memphis and you went to the Baptist Hospital, you’d go in through a back entrance. And you’d go to a segregated ward, where you would be in a big room with about 15 or 20 other people. And your doctor, if he was black, would not have privileges on staff. And the same would have been true for Dr. King in Montgomery or in Atlanta.

Dr. Vanessa Gamble, who is the new director of minority affairs at the Association of American Medical Colleges here in Washington, has documented the incredibly important role that Medicare and Medicaid played in helping to desegregate hospitals. Medicare was a lever that lifted equity and equality in hospitals. In 1965, our Department issued regulations mandating that hospitals had to be in compliance with Civil Rights Act—which had been passed just the year before—in order to be eligible for Federal assistance or to participate in any federally assisted program. The passage of Medicare and Medicaid legislation that year made every hospital a potential recipient of federal funds, and therefore obligated every hospital to comply with civil rights legislation if they wanted to get paid.

The law changed, but practice was slower.

When I was a medical student in St. Louis, at Barnes Hospital around 1970, researchers asked why the hospital still seemed to be segregated. Why? Because clerks in the admissions office—both black and white—were so accustomed to the old ways that they continued to admit the races to their old units. The law had changed, but racial stereotypes had remained. Racist practices were illegal, but racism was institutionalized, and the seeds of racism grew into practices that amounted to discrimination.

I ask you, is it any different today, 31 years after Dr. King was shot in my hometown, and we grieved over the loss of a great American? Is it different 31 years after I was ashamed of the symbol that my hometown had become, when all that Dr. King wanted was to put into practice the placards that the Memphis sanitation workers wore, that read, “I am a man”?

Today, research shows that African-Americans are one-third less likely to have coronary bypass surgery than whites with the same conditions. Why? And today, African-Americans with HIV are less likely to receive antiviral treatment. Why do these disparities occur?

The easy answer is that it is because African-Americans are more often uninsured. And that is true. But even with the same insurance, African-Americans don’t have the same access to primary care doctors, specialists and hospitals. And most distressing, even with the same insurance and being cared for at the same hospitals, African-Americans get different care. In one study I did, if you were a black woman you were much less likely to get referred for cardiac catheterization.

The reason—I fear—is that, despite Dr. King’s advances, and despite civil rights laws, and despite Medicare, racism is a part of the institution of American life, and the seeds of racism still grow into discriminatory practices.

So, now 31 years after Dr. King’s death and 35 years after Medicare broke down segregated wards in the nation’s hospitals, the question for us is: What can we do today in our Department to eliminate these disparities, whether they grow out of lack of insurance, lack of access, or lack of quality care for those who get access?

No matter where we work in this Department—

At the Health Care Financing Administration, where care is funded.

At the Health Resources and Services Administration, where programs are supported to help access.

At the Food and Drug Administration, where safe drugs are assured.

At the National Institutes of Health, where research can identify the causes of disease.

At the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, where we find out why the quality of care isn’t what it can be, and where our name itself speaks of an arc, of closing gaps.

In every operating and staff division—

We can use the levers that we are so lucky to have, and so privileged to use, to eliminate the barriers to high quality health care.

Because we shall overcome.

We shall overcome the disparities in health care, whether they are due to economic barriers, or institutionalized racism, or even unconscious discrimination. We—as public servants—can build on Dr. King’s contribution to the moral health of our country to make our own contributions to the physical and mental health of all of its people.

Let’s make that commitment today.
